Review: J.Crew Spring 2013 Arrivals, Part 1

After the crazy 50% sale last month, J.Crew is back with their new arrivals this week! Although I didn't plan on buying anything after going overboard last month, I thought it wouldn't hurt to stop by just to take a peek! In fact, when sales roll around again, this will probably be beneficial to J.Crew since I won't be ordering multiple sizes just to find my perfect fit (or so I tell myself).

I first saw this top in one of the catalogue pictures posted online. I thought the collar was so elegant, but knew immediately the price point for something like this would be quite high. At $110, it is quite steep, but actually a bit less than what I was expecting, since the beading was really intricate and high quality! I normally avoid high neck tops, fearing that cutting my neck line will make my round face already rounder, but this top looked fine on me! The business on the collar probably distracted from my face. The body of the top is a bit boxy, but nothing some tucking in won't fix (or so I hope). I see this shirt getting creased easily (ha, see picture), but I guess that is to be expected from oxford/cotton material. Mental note to keep this on my want list. in petite 0.

The downtown jacket - xs, $148
After seeing cargo style coats on several bloggers, I wanted to find one of my own. Jackets like this are so useful and never go out of style. Though I thought I would want to go with the conventional army-ish green, B convinced me to try this blue one, as it was a bit different from the standard jacket. Online, the blue looks shiny, almost like a waxy, glossy navy; however, in person, it was a lot more muted and toned down. The jacket was also a bit spacious, I would have needed to size down to xxs, which I suspect may still be ba bit big. In terms of material, it seems pretty well made, and I like the look of it as a whole...it just needs to be the right size!

 Tipped boy shirt - 00, $118
Constructed from their silk crepe material, this shirt reminded me of the navy Ann Taylor blouse I bought awhile back. The tipped detailing reminds me of the tipped hacking jacket, and I think it would be quite funny if I wore the two together (matchy-matchy anyone?). I love the look of this blouse and will definitely try to pick it up in petite 0 when the price point is more attractive.

Rosie dress - 0, $188
During one of my visits to a B&M store last month, one of the sales associates had this on, and it looked so elegant and gorgeous on her! She paired this dress with a pair of tall cognac boots and tights, similar to what I have on here. I was so disappointed that this ended up looking a bit nightgown-y on me. Even if I had sized down to 00, of which there was none left, I doubt it would have looked much better. B suggested I try a belt, but I had been too lazy. Also, notice the ruffled sleeve detailing- I haven't decided if I like it or not, but think I would have preferred it just streamlined. This dress is made of silk, but I probably would not be able to tell it apart from silky polyester material...it just didn't seem as luxurious as I had expected it to be.

Now this, this was the dress I had been anticipating on trying the most! I first noticed this dress on Gigi's banner, and thought it was the most interesting, beautiful dress. I had to have it (or at least try it on and see that it looked bad on me so I wouldn't buy it). Various bloggers have reviewed this dress, and many claim that it doesn't flatter their skin tone, or the shape is off, and various other things. Despite this, I was determined to try it on, if only to get over it. When I finally did, I was disappointed (although my wallet is probably very happy) to not be in love with it. As you can see, a 00 fits pretty loosely, which I expected, due to the cut of the dress. There are pockets on the sides, though not revealed in the picture, which can shift and cause unexpected bulky-ness. Finally, the color brings out my yellow undertones...not a great thing for someone who is already very yellow. :/ If I see this dress on super sale, then I would maybe consider it. I heard it is a top seller though, so it may not make it that far.

Tweed-front tee - xs, $75
This I grabbed on a whim as I was on my way to the dressing room. Surprisingly, I liked it a lot! Though it may not be the most comfortable shirt (it's a little stiff), I think that there is something to be said about the different textures that are present. The sleeves are of silk material, while the rest of the shirt is cotton. I will definitely make a note of this one to look out for in a future sale...and probably in one size smaller, xxs as well.

I hope you guys have enjoyed this quick review! There are a few things that I saw in the catalogue that I didn't seen in the store and wanted to try, so I will probably pop back in in a few weeks or so. Any new finds on your end?

  1. Thanks for posting these reviews and photos Celena!

The high neck top wasn't on my original list of favorites, but the more I see it, the more I like it. Very pretty! The tipped boy shirt is on my list too and I'm just waiting for the white/black version to arrive. The tweed front tee looks great on you too. :)

  3. Thanks for the reviews! That Tilda Top looks adorable on you, as does the Tweed-Front Tee! I need to save up for an honest-to-goodness bootcut denim hunt in Atlanta, so no random blouse purchases for me for a while. I barely even registered the scroll print Jules dress when it rolled out because I am so. flipping. tired. of Jules. They've done it to death!

    1. Thank ya Whitney! This is actually my first time trying on the Jules, and I'm really surprised they keep rolling it out because I wasn't very impressed as well, especially for something that is considered a "jcrew classic". I'm the opposite of you, I have too many skirts (though not pants) now, and they by far outnumber my tops, so I need to build that part of my wardrobe!

  4. I have the Downtown Field in navy and really like it. I'm looking forward to warmer weather so I can wear it again. The Tweed tee looks great on you. I didn't like it when I saw it in the catalog, but now I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the reviews.

It's great seeing your pics and hearing your thoughts. I actually think the Jules looks lovely, but I guess you know your style and colouring way better than a photo can show.

  7. I tried the tweed front tee and really like it. But I think I really like it at sale price. We'll see... I love the downtown field. You'd be surprised how easily it layers, even if you get it close fitting to the body. Thanks for sharing pics :)
